Cultural, ecological and adventure tourism

Radio Bulgaria, 27.05.2005

If you are inquisitive and love adventures, then why not opt for a vacation in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast? In late spring the coast is serene, while nature presents incredible feasts for the eye and the soul. The northernmost section of the Bulgarian Black Sea coat is a region little known as a tourist destination. Its visitors are fascinated with its reserves and humid zones bathing in lush greenery and alternating with rocky capes and huddled bays. Near the harbor of the town of Kavarna, Cape Chirakman stands out against the emerald surface of the Black Sea. It is the antiquity predecessor of today’s town with 2500 years long history. Later in time this place attracted Greek and Roman colonizers. Cape Kaliakra represents a breath-taking view. The horizontal purple rocks wedge 2 km into the sea. The remains of a Roman fortress built over the foundations of a Thracian village of 4-c. BC, dot its rocky slopes. At the Kavarna museum you can obtain systematic knowledge about the region’s history. The exhibition there traces its development starting from 5-6 c. BC to the present day. The ethnographic exposition shows authentic costumes and objects spanning the period from 12 to 18 c. In the warm seasons Kavarna welcomes visitors from Bulgaria and abroad. The region is paradise for lovers of wild nature. Some 400 plant species grow in the Kaliakra Reserve. Part of them are endemites or are threatened with extinction. The site lies on the major bird migratory route Via Pontica, and this has made it a magnet for ornithologists and tourists from across the world. Equipped with cameras they are ready to spend hours waiting for a bird flock. Over the recent years an increasing number of tourists come to this wonderful place. Their motivation is not exhausted with the comfort of hotels and the relaxation at Black Sea beaches. Local travel agents offer very good entertainment programs. French, Swiss and English tourists are very keen on the program “Safari along the black roads of the northern Black Sea coast”. The jeep drive starts from the archaeological reserve Iailata. In Iailata there are ruins from ancient civilizations, while its rocks are the habitat of rare bird species. The convoy with the robust vehicles proceeds to the canyon of the Bolata Reserve – a refuge of 150 bird species. The safari includes a picnic with a barbecue. The return route cuts across the lovely Dobruja plain. see source
