EU money inflow to Bulgaria

Sofia Echo Com, Ivan Vatahov, 27.12.2005

WHILE Bulgaria enjoys a constantly rising number of tourists from the European Union, the bloc is also officially funding the development of the sector in this country. Quite recently, it was announced that EU funds would be invested in turning some of Bulgaria’s archaeological and nature sites into tourist attractions. These include the ancient Thracian village of Perperikon, the basilica near the village of Baroutin and the rock churches near the south-eastern town of Svilengrad, as well as the Yagodinska Cave and Haramiiskata Doupka Cave. Most important among the sites is Perperikon, 20 km north-east of the town of Kurdjali in south-eastern Bulgaria. Recent discoveries showed that Perperikon was the capital of an ancient civilisation called “The Mountain People”. In ancient Greek history the Perperikon sanctuary was as important as that of Apollo at Delphi. A total of 5.8 million euro has already been extended under the PHARE Cross-border Co-operation programme between Bulgaria and Greece for the five sites. The projects must be completed by June 2007. After a thorough study of the cultural heritage in the Rhodope Mountains (where all the five sites are located), EU experts found that no road signs or any other signs exist to direct tourists to the places of interest. Most of the sites also have no toilets, information desks or even fences to protect them from continuous incursions by treasure hunters. The Brussels experts also found that the money that Bulgaria extends for excavation is much too little to help explore the entire Valley of Orpheus, as it has become known. According to the ancient stories, the legendary singer and musician was born in this part of the world. The EU’s PHARE programme plans to fund the exploration of a total of 30 archaeological sites in Bulgaria and to turn at least 20 of them into tourist attractions. All are in the Rhodope Mountains. No matter how important these funds could be for the development of Bulgaria’s tourism, players in the sector still continue to count mainly on the money that the tourists pouring in from the EU spend on holiday in Bulgaria. The launch of the skiing season in the resort of Bansko on December 17 was probably the only free attraction that holidaymakers will have the entire winter. The launch went well, as Alpine skiing legends Marc Girardelli, Rosi Mittermeier and Franz Klammer, together with famous former Bulgarian football player and now national team coach Hristo Stoichkov made show runs for the opening ceremony. As all over Bulgaria, there was a heavy fall of snow. Together with representatives of the Yulen Ski School, the four noted athletes kept the enthusiastic audience amused for hours before raising a banner bearing the inscription “Bansko: No.1 Resort in South-Eastern Europe”. The three legendary skiers declared that Bulgaria might be a serious candidate to host the Winter Olympic Games in 2014 and that they would contribute for this country’s successful application. Bansko welcomed the first skiers with snow and four excellently prepared ski runs. Next year Bansko Municipality plans to invest 10 million leva in new infrastructure in and around the town, said Bansko mayor Alexander Kravarov. “The last summer season saw about 200 000 tourists on holiday in the mountain resort and another 500 000 in the last winter season,” Kravarov said. According to tour-operator forecasts, this year is expected to see a 20 per cent increase in tourists, with a rising number of foreigners. From 2001 to 2004, investments in tourism at the resort exceeded 180 million euro. see source
