The Hilton Sofia

Business Traveller, Rachael Jolley, 21.04.2004

What’s noticeable about the ultra modern Hilton Sofia is the service culture, reports Rachael Jolley. First impressions: In contrast to the anti-service ethos of the old Eastern Bloc, hotel staff in former communist countries are shaping up to be some of the best in the world. Here, staff were all under 30, spoke excellent English as well as many other languages, were obviously well educated and were always willing to help. Check-in was quick and efficient and the receptionist was warm and friendly, which turned out to be typical of the rest of the staff. Prime position: The hotel is about a 10-minute stroll to the centre of Sofia, with its restaurants and cafes, and two minutes from the city's conference centre. There were always taxis parked outside. The room: The room had a large double bed and a spacious bathroom with stand-alone shower and bath. The essential bath oils in trendy test tube-style bottles made a nice feature in the bathroom and enticed me to have a soak. Bathroom speakers allow you to catch up with the news while in the tub. The room was bright, well lit and comfortable and the desk had plenty of room to work on. Getting down to business: As I didn't have a laptop with me, I made use of the free PCs in the business centre. Internet access was reasonably cheap. A young staff member happily showed me how to use the computer. Leisure time: Unfortunately the pool was closed for refurbishment while I was visiting but a walk into the city centre provided my exercise. In the hotel's Artists Bar, the atmosphere was such that it was a comfortable place for a woman to sit alone without feeling conspicuous. When I returned to the bar the next day I was greeted like an old friend. Highlight: Staff couldn't do enough to help. Verdict: A smart hotel with excellent staff. I have no complaints. see source
