Increasing interest in Skakavishki falls

Bulgariagazette, 23.09.2009

Nearly 150 people visit the waterfall near the village Polska Skakavitsa (Kyustendil region) each week. The local administration is considering the creation of an ecological path which ends with the beautiful waterfall. The project, part of the rural development program, is worth 200 000 EUR. The ecological path starts in Zemen, follows the bank of the river Struma into a unique gorge and ends in Skakavishki falls and the fortress “Kaleto” in the ancient Zemlangrad. Tourists can also reach the waterfall with a train from the station “Skakavitsa” or with a car through the village Rajdavitsa. The clean air in the region of Zemen, the natural wonders, the monastery of Zemen, and the unique gorge offer excellent opportunities for tourism development. “Zemen is a tourism region with a proven cultural significance”, states the vice-mayor of the municipality Dimitar Boyanov. “For now however, these opportunities are not fully used. We lack the material base, the transport means and other services that are vital for tourism. The municipality lacks a hotel; it only has three hunting lodges. The locals aren’t used to the idea of providing bedding for tourists yet, but they realize the good opportunities.”
