International kukeri carnival in Razlog – taste the local flavours

The 5th edition of the International Kukeri carnival “Strachevata” will take place on January 19th, 2013 in Razlog. The official guest of the event is a representative of the European Federation of Carnival cities.
The start of the event is on 11 o’clock and the central square in the city will be full of kukeri activities and bells. 1500 kukeri (people, dressed in Bulgarian traditional masquerade costumes. Read more in Wikipedia) will participate in the carnival.
Every kukeri group will have about 15 minutes to present its own program. The performances will be evaluated by a jury on the basis of four major criteria: the presentation of moments in kukeri traditions, the maintenance and the conveyance of the local cultural flavours, the presentation of the traditional features, typical of the respective region, costumes, as well as the artistic value of the performance.
Kukeri groups are from all Bulgaria’s regions and Macedonia is presented also by three groups. Strachevata is a continuation of the New Year’s kukeri festival in Razlog. The city has been a member of the Federation of European carnival cities since 1995.
