Sofia Echo Com, 25.04.2005

A LARGE-SCALE Bulgarian-Italian business forum held in Sofia on April 14 and April 15 showed evidence of firm interest among Italian companies in investing in Bulgarian tourism. Bosco Scuro, president of the Italian Association of Tourist Agents, said Bulgaria had the potential to develop rural, eco, and ski tourism for Italian visitors. Bulgaria was an attractive travel destination but not very well known in Italy, he said. To encourage more Italians to visit this country and make use of the opportunities offered by spa tourism, travel services offered by low-budget air carriers should expand, Scuro said. The chairperson of the Bulgarian Association of Tourist Agents, Donka Sokolova, used the forum to present opportunities for multimodal travel and theme holidays in Bulgaria. She emphasised that the country had well-preserved nature and a large number of hot springs and cultural monuments. According to Bisser Yalumov, executive director of Bulgaria’s Agency on Tourism, the country is to sign an open skies agreement. Institutional support will be provided to Italian companies wanting to offer air services to Bulgaria. The Italian market was important for Bulgaria in terms of special-purpose trips, including wine tours and religious, cultural and historical tourism, he said. In 2004, Bulgaria was visited by 30 000 Italian tourists, up 20 per cent from 2003, Yalumov said. The flow of Bulgarian tourists to Italy in 2004 was 140 000. Meanwhile, Bulgaria, represented by the Tourism Agency (which is within the Ministry of Culture and Tourism), was given an award for best national presentation by a foreign participant at the International Fair of Tourism and Sport, held in Belgrade from April 13 to 16. The award was presented by the minister of trade, tourism and services Bojan Dimitrijevic. The Bulgarian stand at the fair hosted 14 companies. Serbian tour operators and customers showed a keen interest in Bulgaria as a destination. Yalumov, who led the Bulgarian representation at the fair, met Serbian state tourism officials and industry organisations and agreed with them to draw up and implement projects in cultural, historical and convention tourism and enter Western Europe, North America and Japan. Sofia will host a presentation of Belgrade’s experience in attracting foreign tourists and setting up tourist information centres. In 2004, 853 102 people from Serbia-Montenegro visited Bulgaria, of whom 576 965 were tourists. see source
