Kukeri Festival ‘Kukerland’ in Yambol
Anita Valentinova, 16.02.2011
When: 4th- 6th March 2011
Where: Yambol
The attractive kukeri festival ‘Kukerland’ will be held this year due to the support of the local municipalities Yambol and Tundzha. Instead of the traditional date in February, this year’s edition will be held in the beginning of March. Hence, we expect Masquerade festival ‘Kukerland’ to be held from 4th until 6th of March 2011. Again, many contests will be organized within this year’s festival. Many Bulgarian and foreign groups will take place in the competition on 5th of March 2011 at 10 o’clock.
The festival ‘Kukerland’ showcases Bulgarian folklore traditions, related to the winter and spring Bulgarian festivals. Hence, the initiative is provoked by the inspiration to preserve the traditions so that the generations to come will pay respect to the local customs.
Kukeri, djumali, babugeri, survakari- there are various names for Bulgarian kukeri dancers. All kukeri dancers are dressed in unusual costumes and wear weird masks. Kukeri dancing and kukeri festivals are some of Bulgaria’s best kept traditions. What will we see this year? Perhaps we will delight typical kukeri in unusual costumes. Would we see various shows? To find out what the answers are, we just need to attend ‘Kukeriland’ in Yambol.
