Mountain Museum will be established in Bansko

The municipality counsel of Bansko has voted for the construction of a Mountain museum in Bulgaria’s top ski resort. There are only 5 mountain museums worldwide-in Chamonix, Cermat, Grindelwald and Zakopane. The mountain museum in Bansko is expected to be housed in the building of the old cinema next to the monument of Paysii Hilendarski, Bulgarian man of letters.

The building was constructed in 1922. The roof has been already replaced in order for the building to be partially restored and prepared to house all exhibitions of the Mountain museum. The financing of the project is provided by EU. Many ski legends, enthusiasts, professionals in the field of mountaineering, caving and mountain culture have given their exhibits. Here visitors will be able to see the helmet of the legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messnerw who climbed the Dhaulagiri peak. The Italian alpinist Walter Bonatti also gave the shoes which he used to climb the Alps. Lyudmil Yankov also contributed to the collect with a knife which he brought with him when he climbed Everest Mount.
