Let me introduce the glamorous Nessebar-a piece of the paradise

Nessebar is Black Sea coastal resort with history centuries ago, situated north from Bourgas city and south of Stara Mountain and Emine boak. The old part of the city is situated on a small piece of land-around 850m long and 350m wide, linked with the continent by narrow neck of land. The new part of resort is located on the coast and becomes bigger fast, making invisible borders between Nessebar and the near cities and resorts. Nessebar was established 3,000 years ago in the end of the Bronze Age by the ancient Thracians. Its name was Messambria-the city of Melsa, who is regarded to be the establisher of the resort. At that time, the city was provided with two harbors, where till nowadays we find remnants of ancient ships. Greek settlers inhabited it around 6 B.C. and they changed the pronunciation of the name to Messembria. Gradually the city flourished and became powerful with own government and coins.

The city released gold emission coins 3B.C. which is a sign for bloom and wealth. Trade relationships are made with Mediterranean cities, Black Sea cities and many others. The resort of Nessebar was invaded by the Roman army 1 B.C. and the next century was completely included in the borders of the Roman Empire. Mesembria kept its position as important trade and cultural centre during its Roman period and the evidence is the preserved till nowadays marble reliefs, statues and inscriptions, as well as the pedestal of the bronze statue of the emperor Klavdii. The Roman Empire made Constantinopol a new capital city and the Christian became official religion of the empire. The close proximity of Messembria to the new capital was in favour to the city’s development and there the construction of many churches and basilicas began, some of which were identical to those in the capital city. This glamorous sea resort was invaded by Bulgarians in 812. At this time, Slavs and Bulgarians inhabited it and changed the name of the city to Nessebar. During the time of the Bulgarian power, many churches and monasteries nearby popped up. The history investigators consider that 40 churches were into existence in Nessebar, but only 26 of them are found. Nessebar was invaded by Ottomans in 1453. During Ottoman rule the city didn’t decline-the construction and wall-paintings of churches continued.

Nessebar was small town in the end of the 19th century, which residents were fish men and farmers. The new zenith was in 1959, when nearby it the big tourist resort Sunny Beach was established. Nowadays Nessebar is one of the most visited tourist destinations on Bulgarian Black Sea. The beach coastal line is to length of approximately 4km. The remnants of fortresses’ walls and many ancient buildings attract both thousands tourists and history investigators and archaeologists. Nowadays several museums, gathered rich archaeological and ethnographic collections: the Archaeological and Ethnographical museum and also the churches museums St.Spas and St.Stefan. Nessebar is a city, favourite to many Bulgarian people. Here many Bulgarian and foreign tourists are gathered during the summer months, attracted by the romantic combination of the sea, sun and antique remnants. A multitude of hotels and guest houses of various categories offer a wealth of accommodation opportunities. Here, in this piece of the paradise there is space for everyone, regardless of the budget available for summer holiday. The close proximity to Sunny Beach provides many amusements and all night fun. Nessebar continues its cultural traditions. Nowadays on the area of Nessebar Municipality are in function Municipality’s Theatre and Municipality’s Dance school.
