Oldest European Town Square Discovered in Bulgaria

Standart Daily, 30.08.2005

Bulgarian archeologists have discovered a town square, in the village of Kran near the town of Kazanlak, believed to be the oldest preserved in Europe, said Prof Vassil Nikolov, head of the archeological expedition and director of the National Archeological Institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Science. "The town square belonged to a settlement in the Valley of the Thracian Kings dating back to the late bronze era - around 4100 or 4200 BC," added Prof Nikolov. The ancient square spreads over about 0.1 ha and is covered with a grayish green clay that had been so hard beaten that the it got as firm as concrete. The latest archeological finds evidence that a high-ranking Thracian leader lived in the settlement - most probably a tribal priest. "In the end of last week we discovered a piece from a stone scepter, perfectly crafted that was a symbol of power in ancient Thrace," added Prof Nikolov. Most probably there was sanctuary near the square. The archeologists have discovered also some fifty stone balls that might have been used in religious rituals. A stonewall was discovered that is supposed to have protected the home of the lord from floods and rains. see source
