Picasso's masterpieces in Sofia

The works of Pablo Picasso, 71 paintings and drawings and 11 pieces of ceramics, along with 24 photographs of him by Lucien Clergue, will receive viewers at the National Gallery for Foreign Art starting December 17 2008; a day before, a morning news conference gave background to the exhibition that will welcome the public for three months. Brought to Bulgaria largely due to the efforts of Emi Barouh of media production company Barouh and Partners and with the support of mobile phone operator Mtel, the show, entitled Yo Ne Busco. Yo Encuentro (“I do not search, I find”), is curated by Marisa Oropesa of Spain, who worked for a year to bring it all together. Pieces included in the exhibition include everything from a simple graphic on a ceramic plate of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza (1955), to a black and white Faune souriant (1948), a ceramic fish dish (1954), a crayon face from 1972, a head of Harlequin with a mask (1971) and a number of interpretations and series of a woman named Françoise. Along with these are photographs showing Picasso as a man in real life, in various settings, with friends and alone. The second complement to the exhibition is outside the National Gallery for Foreign Art: the Instituto Cervantes, thanks to its director Luisa Fernanda Garrido Ramos, is holding a show of works from Picasso held by Bulgarian collectors, museums and galleries. This runs from December 15 2008 to January 10 2009.

In addition, at the National Gallery, there will be an exhibition of posters of other current Picasso exhibitions from around the world; a competition for small-format graphics (running until February 15) on the theme Pablo Picasso in Bulgaria, in partnership with the National Academy of Arts; and a selection of Picasso-related films to be shown on Tuesdays at the Sofia arthouse cinemas Dom na Kinoto and Odeon. Even more events are planned for 2009. Yo Ne Busco. Yo Encuentro is on at the National Gallery for Foreign Art (at Alexander Nevsky Square in Sofia) until March 15 2009.
