Rural tourism in Bulgaria – Shiroka Luka

31.08.2013

One of the most interesting places in the Rhodopes is the village Shiroka Luka. It is located 16km away from Pamporovo ski resort. The origin of the name of the village comes from the old Bulgarian word “luka” which means a curve. Shiroka Luka is an ancient village which was founded in 17th century and nowadays it is a popular rural tourism destination which attracts many tourists. You can enjoy beautiful nature pictures in the village, music traditions and culture, splendid architecture from the Revival period and a great historic heritage. Shiroka Luka has really impressed me with its unusual authentic houses in Rhodope style. In the past the village was famous for its craftsmen who lived there. Houses are now preserved in their typical architectural style, with a wooden staircase and two floors. Most of them are spacious, with small windows.

If someone whispers Shiroka Luka, then you should recall the folklore in the area. This is the birthplace of many popular singers and bigepipe musicians. The village has its own school for folklore arts which was opened in 1972. An interesting tradition in the village is the Kukeri festival which is held every year in the first Sunday of March. Tourists can become a part of the great holiday on this day. Kukeri wear big masks, wooden sticks, painted in a red colour and their dances make the evil powers fade away from people’s homes and souls. People sing songs, dance during the holiday and if you look at all this, then undoubtedly you will soon become a local resident for a while.

Another interesting place which you can visit is the Ethnographic museum which is a rich home in a Rhodope style, as well as the church “St.Virgin Nativity”. It was opened in 1834. Some monuments of prominent Bulgarian figures can be also visited in the village. Shiroka Luka offers opportunities for eco and rural tourism. The region would impress you with the beautiful nature, fresh air, rich architecture and venerable trees which are particularly attractive for guests in Shiroka Luka. Some of top Bulgaria’s rock formations are also located near Shiroka Luka: “Glavata”, “Momata”, the chapels “St.Atanas” etc.

Lovers of Greek mythology may know where Orpheus went - his head was torn off and thrown into the River Hebros - but not where he came from: Bulgaria. The mythical musical hero, whose skill with the lyre calmed savage beasts and made trees dance, was born in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, which stretch all the way to Greece. Orpheus lost his wife, Eurydice, to the underworld for ever when, emerging into the sunlight, he turned to smile at her.
