Russian Patriarch Greets Bulgarians for National Holiday

The Standart Daily, 03.03.2008

At the Sunday mass in the Temple of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, the Patriarch of Moscow and the whole of Russia, Alexius II appealed to all Russians to go to the ballot boxes and greeted the representatives of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church with the Liberation Day, March 3rd. Bulgarian Metropolitan of Varna, Kiril attended the mass. "Russia has contributed a lot to the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman rule. Many monuments were built in this country to testify our brotherhood that was sealed with the blood of soldiers who fought for the freedom of the Balkan countries and which stand for the unity of the Slavic peoples," said Patriarch Alexius II. The Metropolitan of Varna thanked the Russian Church and the Russian people for "their role in the path of the Bulgarian and other Eastern European people." Metropolitan Kiril added that "the Bulgarian Church honours in the liturgy the memory of the Russian Tsar Alexander II Nikolaevich." Sergey Mironov, Speaker of the Federation Council and the Upper House of the Russian Parliament arrived yesterday in Bulgaria for the celebrations of the Bulgarian national holiday - Liberation Day. Today he will attend the national flag hoisting ceremony in Pleven. Later Mironov will lay flowers to the monuments to General Skobelev and the Russian Emperor Alexander II and then will tour the Panorama in Pleven, northern Bulgaria.
