Sofia's Closed Boulevard to Please Foreign Guests

Closing Sofia's key Vitosha Blvd. for motor vehicles is good for international guests, according to a deputy mayor. Tourists need a central spot where they can take a walk undisturbed by cars, Tsvetan Tsvetanov believes. He was speaking Friday to participants in the main Bulgarian tourism event, the Bulgaria Dream Area Conference, which is being held for the fifth time. This year's focus is on convention tourism, which, according to state officials and businessmen, could be a flourishing sector of Bulgarian economy. Next year the topic will be "Bulgarian tourism in the EU," Maxim Behar, the CEO of Bulgarian PR leader M3 Communication Group, Inc. that organized the event, said Friday. Organized in partnership with the Bulgarian Convention and Visitors Bureau (BCVB), Bulgaria Dream Area brought together more than 150 participants, including heads of European convention bureaus, state representatives and tourism experts. Convention visitors to Bulgaria are expected to number 350 000 this year, marking a significant increase over the past five years. That was broken by Deputy Culture Minister Dimitar Hadzhinikolov as he made the opening speech. A business visitor spends ten times more cash that one who comes for fun, Hadzhinikolov believes. Meanwhile, Bob Miller, former Nevada Governor and a longtime friend to Bulgaria, emerged to be getting along well with Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov. Miller said that they had met in person, and Borissov invited the Nevada guest to call him Bob, thus becoming namesakes, Miller joked. see source
