Sofia city boasts underground city like Rome

Anita Valentinova, source: avtotravel-bg.blogspot.com, 21.05.2010

The mayor of Sofia city said that the project Serdika will turn Sofia city into an attractive destination such as Rome and Athens. Residents and tourists will be able to walk through ancient Roman streets among the remnants of medieval cities in the centre of Sofia city. People will be able to drink coffee and have a dinner in boutique restaurants which will be constructed among ruins under the city centre of Sofia. The attraction is a part of the antique complex ‘Serdika’ which will be constructed in Sofia. Many archaeologists, architects and Sofia’s mayor considered and discussed the project.

The complex will be built mainly under the zone between the buildings of the Council of Ministers and the Presidency as a part of it will be future station of the underground ‘Saint Nedelya’. Let us remind you that during the construction of the station many archaeological artefacts from the Antiquity and the late Middle Ages were found. Therefore, it is expected the discovery will attract thousands of tourists. Thus, as soon as the project has been accomplished, Sofia will boast the antique charm of cities like Rome and Athens. The complex will have two levels-on the ground and underground. In addition, a glass dome will cover a part of the complex. It will allow a breathtaking view of the ancient cities under Sofia and will provide natural light during the day. The centre of Sofia was a centre of Emperor’s settlement in 4th century.

Two ancient temples were also discovered among the ruins. The smaller one dates from 14th century. It is supposed that there are valuable murals in the temple. The other one was a functional church in 17th-19th century, however, it may turn out that it was built in 13th century, believe archaeologists.

A great interest will be shown in the remains of ancient dwellings. They had rectangular shape with a courtyard in the middle and they were surrounded by pillars and arches. It is believed that they were constructed in 4th-5th century. Artefacts will be put on display in the open space between Maria Louisa boulevard and the west facade of Central Department store. There will be staircases and terraces between the underground and open zone of the complex. Thus, visitors will be able to easily access the complex from one level to the other.
