The highest ice waterfalls for climbing to be constructed in Smolyan

One of the highest icy waterfalls for climbing in Bulgaria will be constructed in Smolyan. A group is still working on the project and the waterfall will welcome the first alpinists the next winter. A suitable, hard rock which will be poured with water was selected so that an ice base will be formed for climbing activities. The rock is situated in the river Cherna gorge. The place is very suitable, because it is sunless, the temperature is always several degrees lower and water resources, which do not get frozen, are available. Rock climbing in Smolyan is still in a process of further development.
A huge artificial climbing wall at the entrance of Smolyan has been already constructed. In fact, Bulgarian famous alpinist Hristo Prodanov has made some of the existing climbing routes around Smolyan. Many climbing tours for winning the national cup were organized in the 80ties.
At the moment, there are three climbing routes, but they are not so difficult. Smolyanalpinists will take part in Botev Olympics on the 2d of June which will be held in the area “Raiskite skali” (“Paradise rocks”) near the famous Bulgarian waterfall “Raiskoto pruskalo”,the highest waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula

Raysko Praskalo ("Heavenly Spray") , 124.5 m in height, is the highest waterfall in Bulgaria and the Balkans. It is located under Botev Peak (2,376 m) in the Balkan Mountains and is part of the Dzhendema Reserve of the Central Balkan National Park. The waterfall gathers water from snow-drifts.
