Tourist services account for 10% of online sales

Bnr.bg, 28.06.2011

Hotel business in Bulgaria is definitely lagging behind the latest world trends, related to use of modern technologies and the Internet. There are more than 3500 hotels in the country but only 10% of them offer detailed information on the web or online reservations. In Western Europe the level reaches 50%, while in the US – 75%. The digital world has changed our lifestyle and now people prefer to choose the place to spend their vacation online, as well as to make reservations and ask for opinions about hotels and services on the web. Computer technologies have affected all business spheres including tourism. But Bulgarian hotel owners still lag behind when speaking about hi-tech. It turns out that many of them do not know how these technologies can be used in order to increase profits, Petar Petrov from eCommerceAcademy.net explains.

Experts have recently organised an information campaign, entitled “How to turn the number of online visitors into hotel guests.” Web experts and developers met with hotel owners in order to reveal to them the vast opportunities of the Internet. According to Petar Petrov, hotels count too much on tour operators to reach their clients. It is true than many of the bigger hotels in Bulgaria have their own web sites but just 5% of them are user-friendly and facilitate access to information. Experts say that information about the services and a few photos were not enough. That is why bigger companies also count on video marketing, which is something little known in Bulgaria. Social networks like Facebook can also be very useful but few companies in Bulgaria actually make profit of this.

“It is a paradox that some of the best computer experts work in Bulgaria, yet the business has not managed to integrate these technologies in the everyday work,” Petar Petrov says. “That is why online sales in Bulgaria are not many. It is a fact that some of the Bulgarian users do not trust Internet completely, which is also a factor. However, the sphere of online sales is developing and it is expected that the share of the online market in Bulgaria would reach the level in the other EU Member States,” Mr. Petrov concluded.
