Vacations in a Monastery - Affordable to All

Standart Daily, 14.11.2005

Don't look for hotels and mountain chalets, ask for monasteries, advise people with good experience in choosing suitable places for excellent vacations. The very locations of the monasteries, usually amidst heavenly mountain landscape, offer a relief from the everyday worries and problems. Of course, the best time for excellent rest in monasteries is summer. But a good number of the monasteries in Bulgaria offer good vacation conditions in the winter season as well. Especially for people who are not fussy and prefer solitude to luxury. The three Patriarchal convents - Rila, Bachkovski and Troyan monastries need no special advertising. Their guest rooms are equipped with central heating, while their 2-bed rooms have a WC and a bath. A night in Rila monastery costs 30 levs. The Bachkovski monastery has been also turned into a tourist site. Bachkovski monastery has 200 beds but it is recommendable to book a room in advance on telephone 03327/277. Troyan monastery also requires early bookings. The visitors to Troyan monastery are mostly attracted by the popular plum brandy made of 40 herbs. Winter is the right time to savour it. Kilifarevski monastery also offers good conditions for vacation. The prices are 6 levs a night for a room with a WC and 4 levs for a room without a WC. Klisurski monastery, located in the western part of Stara Planina (The Balkan Range), close to the town of Varshets, is also a perfect setting for vacation. "Life-giving" water was found in the holy spring of Klisurski monastery in 2000. This water has a low content of minerals and is believed to have healing properties. The monastery has 80 beds and 2 apartments. The prices are respectively 8 levs and 10 levs. The rooms have WCs. The restaurant to the monastery offers traditional Bulgarian meals made of products from the monastery farm. The visitors to the monastery are also offered picnics, horse-riding, folklore concerts. From Sofia, it is easier to reach the monastery by the road to the town of Montana through the Petrokhan pass. see source
