Velingrad to become all-year round tourist destination

Two new Spa hotels will have been opened by the end of the year in Velingrad and two more are in a process of building. Velingrad city has at its disposal 32 hotels, 4 of them are 4-star hotels, one 5-star, two sanatoriums and 140 restaurants. Tourists come mostly in weekends for 2 days. Foreign tourists are predominantly from UK, France and Russia.

Velingrad was acknowledged for a resort of national importance in 1950 and it became International balneology center in 1981. It is famous as Bulgarian Spa capital city. There are about 40 springs, rich of 18 kinds of mineral water. Municipality Velingrad includes in its plan not only balneology and Spa tourism, but also the future development of a wide variety of mountain tourism owing to the healthy climate of Velingrad region, 320 sunny days per year and the availability of mountains and forests.

Basic steps for this purpose are the construction of sport equipment and attractions. Jundola is one of the main resorts in Bulgaria, but the short snow-retention and low altitude stop its development. For this reason, Municipalities Velingrad and Belovo unite for the fulfillment of common project in the area of Belmeken Peak. The project includes the construction of sport equipment. Another accent is the building of winter sports equipment on the mountain peak Sjutka, which is the second highest in Rhodopes Mountain (2186m) and there the snow-retention is approximately 5 months a year. The restoration of the most impressive Bulgaria karst spring, Kleptusa Lake which is a symbol of Velingrad is among prime tasks. Municipality Velingrad will offer hunting tourism, eco tourism and mountain bike-riding so as to widen its choice of tourist products. Belmeken Dam Lake and Batak Lake are also among the landmarks which will be made more popular. Money is allocated for the development of historical tourism, as a fixed amount of the money is allocated to the exploration and revelation of some old medieval churches.
