Some call it simply May Day and it usually refers to several public holidays in countries all over the globe. It has become an International celebration of the social and economic achievements of the labour movements. 1st of May is International Workers’ Day and it commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, more precisely their efforts to get the work day shortened to eight hours. This is the reason why the first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is synonymous with International Workers’ Day. In addition, May Day is a traditional holiday in many countries. In this sense, May 1st or May Day, just may have more holidays than any other day of the year. It is a true celebration of Spring. It is the time of year when warmer weather begins; beautiful flowers start to blossom and the nature is embraced in greenery. Indeed we can regard May as the time of love, faith, re-birth and romance. It's a neopagan festival, a saint's feast day, and a day for demonstration of labour movements.

In Bulgaria, 1st of May is a national holiday. In the UK, the first Monday of May is a Bank Holiday. As May 1st does not always fall on Monday, May Day festivities have been moved to the Monday bank holiday in order for people to enjoy the celebration properly. In relation to the above, International Labour Day falls on 1st of May and therefore depending on the day of the week it falls, people may extend their holiday. It makes some sense, because 1st of May should not fall on Saturday on Sunday. If so, however, there will be an extension to Monday or Tuesday.
