Bulgarian parliament abolishes ‘foreigner prices’

Sofia Echo Com, 21.11.2005

PARLIAMENT has approved changes to the Tourism Act that will compel hotels, restaurants and resorts to charge Bulgarians and foreigners uniform prices. The second reading of the act was approved on November 11, over the objections of ultra-nationalist coalition Ataka – which said that the change would mean that the prices Bulgarians were required to pay would rise – and the Bulgarian Association of Travel Agents (BATA), which said that its members were against the change. It is a requirement for European Union accession that foreigners and Bulgarians be charged equal prices. BATA said that Bulgaria should have waited until it joined the EU. Bulgarian-language media reports said that hotel owners said that the change to the law could not stop them from offering discounts to “certain groups of people”. Bulgaria’s first official move against “foreigner prices” was through a decree by the previous Cabinet in early December 2004. see source
