Bulgarian Tourism Seeks Ways to Diversify Services Portfolio

The Sofia News Agency, 10.01.2007

Bulgarian tourism should seek new ways to diversify the portfolio of services to boost its own development, US experts said in Sofia. Rare birds watch may be such attractive addition, organisers of the annual Bulgaria Dream Area conference said at its opening on Wednesday. Bulgarian tourism has reached its milestone with the accession of the country to the EU - a pinnacle reached in ten years of dynamic development, said co-organiser Bob Miller, former Nevada governor and current honrray consul of Bulgaria to Nevada. The event has been held for a sixth consecutive year focusing for two days representatives of the public and private sectors, non-governmental and civil organisations to discuss opportunities to promote tourism in Bulgaria. The conference was opened by Assen Gagauzov, Regional Development Minister, Stanislav Novakov, deputy chief of State Tourism Authority, Bob Miller, Bulgaria's honorary consul to Nevada (1989-1999) and Mathieu Hoeberigs from the EC's Tourism Unit. This year Bulgaria Dream Area runs under the heading Rendezvous EU, marking the new challenges and realities for the country after its accession to the EU. The two-day forum has gathered for the first time the tourism ministers from the Balkan region. They will consider the opportunities for further development and exchange of experience between Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Macedonia, Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey, as well as Ukraine. The participants in the forum this year will focus also on the opportunities to develop winter, summer, cultural, spa and eco tourism. Some of the issues will tackle the infrastructure readiness of the region as a whole to meet the tourists' demands. Participants in the conference will explore the interaction between public and private sectors, how international tour operators and carriers help develop the region and what attracts foreign investors to Bulgaria.
