North African Crisis Draws in Tourists to Bulgaria

Hotel and restaurant-keepers in Bulgaria expect an influx of Russian and Italian tourists as a result of the widening crisis in North Africa. Bulgarian tour operators also expect a significant number of visitors from Germany, UK and the Scandinavian countries. Bulgarian Consulate Service in Moscow has already issued a large number of entry visas to Russian citizens, who want to spend their holidays in Bulgaria. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, twenty-one thousand Russian citizens were issued Bulgarian entry visas in the first quarter of 2011, which is by 50% more than in the same period of 2010. Last year, the number of Russian tourists in Bulgaria increased by 33% from a year ago and the tendency is likely to continue this year. The Summer tourist season in Bulgaria is expected to begin at the end of April.
