Bulgaria gives 2, 5 million € for Perperikon

Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works invited tenders for the construction of visitors center in Perperikon for a total amount of 2, 5 million €.
This was announced by Prof.Ovcharov during closing press conference for archaeological summer 2008, BGNES reported.
Entire preservation of the object is foreseen to be made, as well as construction of infrastructure, including wooden paths, on which visitors will have the opportunity to walk in the town without demolishing the stone.
One of the most interesting archaeological finds for the season was buried mother and a child in the pose of Virgin Mary with new born child. The grave was discovered in Bulgarian village Galitsa which disappeared in 18th century. What was extraordinary in the case is that the position of bodies completely corresponds to icon-painting principles, portraying Virgin Mary as “itinerary”, explained Ovcharov.
Huge stone crosses, among which some are Templar,appeared most likely as a result of Catholic influences on the necropolis nearby the village.
A church at the foot of Tsarevets Hill, built at the same time with the church “St. St. Peter and Pavel”, was also found in the summer. It was abandoned in ruins by Turkish in response to Tarnovo Rebel. More than 3000 silver coins, bronze crucifixes and alabaster icon are found in it.
Cities from 3-4 century B.C., which follow Hellenic and Roman plans for location, were found during excavations of Perperikon in July, August and September.
Finds of this archaeological season, among which metal arrow of Trojan type, typical for 15-14 century B.C., small handmade amphora and pottery in the shape of a seal will be exhibited in National Archaeological Museum in December.
The discovery of residency of the archon who was appointed by Ivan Alexander for a governor of “Perperikon”

His mortal remains were on the top of “Perperikon” nearby the one and only tower in the stone city. Formed shapely premises and corridors were revealed and the foundations of buildings were preserved to the height of three meters.
According to Prof.Ovcharov, it is a big medieval building with dimensions 20 m height and 15m width. It is among the aristocratic castles which were characteristic of whole Europe in 12-14century.
Historical chronicles showed that Bulgarian King Ivan Alexander appointed a governor of the area after he had conquered Rhodopes Mountain in the middle of 14 century.
Coins of this period which were discovered among the ruins of the medieval castle and fragments, made of expensive porcelain are the proof.
The unique gold seal of Ivan Alexander was also found on this place.
Prof. Ovcharov, the head of expedition “Perperikon”, assumed that the fortress was of extraordinary importance due to its powerful fortification and close proximity to the biggest gold pits on the Balkan Peninsula.
