Anita Valentinova, source: vesti.bg, 05.10.2009

Bulgarian Fire Dancing ‘Nestinarstvo’ was included in UNESCO’s list for intangible cultural heritage. ‘Nestinarstvo’ has been declared a part of the world's cultural heritage by the United Nations UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee of Intangible Heritage granted the traditional Bulgarian dance fire dancing, the protected cultural status at its meeting in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. The main goal of the inclusion is maximum preservation and respectively forwarding of this thousands of years old tradition for the future generation. Bulgaria has already had its first representative in the list- the traditional Bulgarian songs choir “Bistrishki Grannies” which was included in 2005. Undoubtedly the inclusion of Fire Dancing in the UNESCO list is deserved recognition for Bulgaria which has been distinguished as a leader with respect to the preservation of the rich intangible cultural heritage of the human race as infinite mainspring of world cultural diversity. Fire dancing (nestinari) is an ancient pagan mysterious ritual - barefooted dancers (nestinari) in a trance, dancing on burning embers. When the Christianity entered in the Bulgarian culture, this dance has been transformed – dedicated to Christian saints. It is a religious and mystical ritual for expelling illness, for health and fruitfulness.
