An ancient sorcerers’ village was discovered in the Rhodope Mountain

Anita Valentinova, source :reporter.blog.bg, 16.10.2009

An ancient village, believed to be a settlement of sorcerers, was found by archaeologists during excavations in the area of Momchilgrad. Near the banks of Vurbitsa River the archaeologists came across more than 50 pits in which mysterious cult acts took place. The site was inhabited during the 8th century B.C. and the sacrifices were committed until the late medieval period as there were also discovered burnt stones, potteries, pieces of iron edges. Actually the sacrifice pits date back from the 12th century, but other similar to them were found in close proximity and are believed to be over 2 000 years old. According to archaeologists, it is likely that the site was a special one for spells. This summer a team of experienced Bulgarian and French archaeologists also explored another prehistoric settlement-the village Vurhari, dating back to the 6th century which lies within the territory of Momchilgrad. The archaeologists infer that the recently found settlement is closely related to the legendary Troy. The leader of the team announced in July that the findings will prove the statement that the ancestors of the heroic Troy were representative of tribes, which inhabited the lands of Bulgaria, especially the region of Momchilgrad. The settlement which is being explored is in immediate vicinity to the sanctuary of Orpheus is believed to be his tomb.
