All inclusive craze wanes, the time comes for SPA and culture tourism

Standart Daily, 01.10.2010

Businessman Stefan Sharlopov took part in the discussion organized by the Standart on how the discovery o St John the Baptist’s relics could turn into a cornerstone in the development of Bulgarian tourism business.

Mr. Sharlopov, what concrete measures should be taken towards promoting culture tourism in Bulgaria so that the heritage the country possesses would be made known and accessible? - The start has been given by this unique initiative of the Standart. Another thing, as it emerged from the discussion you held - a list of the top 100 culture sights will be compiled and these will be made state priority. In the times of rapid globalization it is very important to be present in the Internet featuring everything we have.

To you, which are the ten sites which should be listed among the top hundred culture and history priority places in Bulgaria? - I think the capitals Pliska, Preslav, Veliko Tarnovo and Sofia are a must. We should start with Perperikon, Sozopol, Nessebar and Balchik, I am sure to forget something. I am thinking of an investment in the southwestern part of Bulgaria linked with the slave market where Spartacus was sold. According to archeological findings, it was situated at only 15 km from modern-day Sandanski. The investment would not be a big one. The sector could invest where a whole-year tourist product could be offered.

Do you expect a strong winter season? - What Pankovski told me after returning from the tourism exchange in Moscow was that there were many planes booked for the winter, so obviously we will have tourists from Russia. I believe the winter season will be a good one. The all-inclusive fashion is on the decline and it will be followed by culture and SPA tourism.

Which nations are tempted by culture tourism? - The Bulgarians themselves form a powerful potential and should not be underestimated in any case. From the foreign markets we could rely on Russia, Germany and all European countries.
