Culture ministry takes over tourism

Pari Daily, Irina Keremidchieva, 22.02.2005

THE TOURISM sector will be transferred from the economy ministry to the ministry of culture. The new ministry of culture and tourism will be headed by Nina Chilova, who replaces Bozhidar Abrashev. Structural and personal changes in the Bulgarian cabinet were announced by prime minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Monday. The two main tourism organisations are divided over the changes. The chairpeople of the Bulgarian Association of Travel Agents (BATA) and the Bulgarian Hotel and Restaurant Association (BHRA), Donka Sokolova and Blagoy Ragin, are not unanimous about the new administration model. There is a consensus on the unification of tourism and culture. The idea was first promoted two years ago, but we didn't believe it will materialise so quickly, Ragin commented. This is good for the sector because cultural tourism was somewhat separated from the development of the sector, while in the world it is a leading subsector, he added. The model combining culture and tourism is adopted in Great Britain but in Bulgaria it was not the time for such a change, BATA's Donka Sokolova said. The ministry of culture is burdened with too many problems and cultural tourism is just one of them. The timing was wrong because it is not clear what will be decided after the general elections [in the middle of 2005]. It would be a different matter if a separate ministry of tourism was established. see source
