Baba Vida Medieval Fortress to be protected by UNESCO

Nearly 500 tourists have visited Baba Vida fortress in Vidin during this weekend. The South African Ambassador in Bulgaria, Sheila Camerer, has announced that there is a possibility for the medieval fortress in Vidin to be included in the protected sites by UNESCO. Tourists are impressed by the cathedral temple ‘St.Dimitur’, the mausoleum of Antim I, the mosque and the library of Osman Pazvantoglu and other major historic sites and cultural monuments in Vidin.

Baba Vida is the only one medieval castle in Bulgaria which played an important role of a defense facility and ruler’s residence. Baba Vida gracefully stands on the banks of Danube River in the northeastern part of Vidin. The foundations of Baba Vida fortress are laid in the end of 10th of century on the remains of the antique fortress Bononia.
