Four Finnish tourists enjoyed snowboarding outside the ski zone Bansko where skiing is forbidden. There are signs alongside the respective surrounding ski zone and therefore skiers and snowboarders are aware of being exposed to avalanche danger if they hit the slopes outside the area.

We would like to remind you that Bulgaria’s ski resort Bansko has seen substantial snowfalls these days and hence there is a high risk of avalanches outside the ski slopes. Even though many European ski resorts lack snow, Bulgaria’s Bansko boasts great ski conditions just a few days before the start of FIS Men Alpine Skiing World Cup Bansko in Bansko. The avalanche allegedly hit four Finnish tourists in the region below Todorka peak. Just a few days before the start of Fis Alpine Skiing World Cup 2011, an event which will turn Bansko into the European ski capital, the tragedy occurred outside Bansko ski zone between the chalets ‘Bunderitsa’’ and ‘’Vihren’’.

After the avalanche has stopped, three tourists managed to dig themselves and called Mountain Rescue Service. The team arrived within 30 minutes. Unfortunately, when 15 representatives of Mountain Rescue Service arrived, they found the Finnish skier who had been killed in the avalanche. It is reported that two tourists were injured. Three Finnish skiers who were involved in the tragedy were hauled to Bansko ski resort. Unfortunately, a helicopter couldn’t examine the area due to the thick mist.

Bansko’s mayor commented that Bansko has issued permission for construction of ski facilities and buildings in ski zone Bansko . Hence, all ski tracks in National Park Pirin were built against the rules. Eco activities plead with the government that is supposed to examine all construction processes, ski tracks and facilities in the region.
