The artificial lakes Batak, Dospat and Balmeken are attractive sites for athletes and fisherman. The surroundings of Velingrad are amazingly picturesque. Legends tell that the ancient Orpheus lived in these places. Sagas tell the story of how the Rhodopes bestowed titanic strength to Spartacus – leader of the slave uprising in Ancient Rome. The old Bulgarian fortress of Tsepina – seat of Despot Slav, is 18 kilometers from Velingrad near the village of Dorkovo.
MINERAL WATER
Mineral waters in the resort are almost everywhere and have very diverse compositions. They sprout from 70 hot springs at the impressive rate of 142 lt. per second – this is more than 12 million litres per day. Their temperatures vary from 46° to 94°С. All waters are weakly mineralized, sulfate-hydrocarbonate-sodium, strongly alkaline, of low hardness and pleasantly drinkable.
