Fischbacher goes one better to win second Bansko downhill

For Andrea Fischbacher Bansko must feel like home. The Austrian ski racer, fastest in two days of training on the difficult and bumpy Banderitsa run, had already finished second in the first downhill race on February 27, but went one better a day later. On a sunny afternoon that defied the weather forecasts, which predicted snowfall across the country, Fischbacher won her first downhill race, and only second of her career. Fischbacher was clocked at 1:45.81 minutes, edging out Slovenia's Tina Maze (1:46.07) and Swiss racer Fabienne Suter (1:46.20), who won the race on the previous day. World Cup holder and this season's leader both in the downhill and overall standings, American Lindsey Vonn, finished well down the tightly-packed field of contenders after losing a lot of time in the second third of the run. But her 12th place finish was enough to secure downhill World Cup for a second year running. With one race remaining on the calendar, Vonn's 402 points put her out of reach for Swiss racer Dominique Gisin, who finished ninth in Bansko. Vonn also remains firmly in command of the overall standings, with her main competitors unable to take advantage of the American's mistake. German Maria Riesch was eighth and Anja Paerson of Sweden once again abandoned the course. Unlike the first race, when she missed a gate just after the half-way point, this time Paerson started strongly but quit early on and appeared to be in pain. She made her way down later on, however, and showed no signs of an injury. The two-time World Cup winner did not look to be on top of her form at any point during training and the downhill races, but there has one more race, the super-giant on March 1, to ensure that her trip to Bansko was not wasted. Final results from the downhill race are as follows: 1. Andrea Fischbacher (AUT) - 1:45.81 2. Tina Maze (SLO) - 1:46.07 3. Fabienne Suter (SUI) - 1:46.20 4. Lara Gut (SUI) - 1:46.43 5. Nadia Fanchini (ITA) - 1:46.61 6. Marion Rolland (FRA) - 1:47.07 7. Elisabeth Goergl (AUT) - 1:47.29 8. Maria Riesch (GER) - 1:47.52 9. Dominique Gisin (SUI) - 1:47.73 10.
