History- Chepelare

The history of Chepelare is a secret since it has not been unveiled yet. Moreover, the legend is associated with secrets and all archaeological remnants serve as evidence that the area was inhabited in the ancient times.

The main source of this historic information is the Thracian artifacts that were found in the area Batalski Kamyk. The remains of all Thracian fortresses show that the area was an important cultural centre. The Roman path from Plovdiv to the Aegean region passed through the valley of Chepelare river, so Chepelare used to be a significant trade centre.

The founder of the place is considered to be Belyo Kehaya who built a house in 1705.
The church ‘’St.Atanas’’ was constructed in 1836. Later on a school was constructed and the temple ‘’Virgin Mary’ was built in 1867.

The period of Bulgarian Renaissance was an important moment in the history of Chepelare and surrounding villages. Bulgarian education and culture were developed in those years. The evidence for the artistic skills of talented craftsmen is a treasury of 14 temples and 72 chapels. Four churches were proclaimed for cultural monuments.
In the beginning of 20th century unique natural surroundings, diligent residents and their hospitality turned Chepelare into a resort.
