Nessebar is the proud heir of the ancient Thracian settlement Messembria, established in the 2nd century B.C. The name of Nessebar means a town of Melsa. In 510 B.C.Messembriya is turned into Greek colony. They call it Messemvria. The flourishing Greek colony had an antique theatre and a temple of the Greek God Apollo. During the Byzantine government of the town, Bulgaria’s Khan Kroum conquered the town. The zenith in the development of Nessebar was the reign of tsar Ivan Alexander which turned the settlement in one of the most important trade and cultural centres in Bulgaria.
