The Catholic Cathedral of St.Joseph in Sofia city

The Cathedral of St Joseph is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Sofia city. It is important that St. Joseph catholic church, Banya Bashi mosque, the Synagogue and St. Nedelya church are within minutes to each other. In fact, the Cathedral of St. Joseph is the biggest Catholic Cathedral in Bulgaria which has 350 seats at its disposal and thus it can gather 1000 worshippers. It is the co-cathedral of the Diocese of Sofia and Plovdiv, together with the Cathedral of St Louis in Plovdiv. The cathedral, rebuilt at its previous location after it was destroyed by the Allied bombing raids during World War II, was inaugurated on 21 May 2006 in the presence of Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals and Cardinal Secretary of State of the Roman Catholic Church. The foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid personally by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Bulgaria in 2002.

During the Sundays and when there are feasts, the church has a Mass in three languages – Polish, Latin and Bulgarian. Otherwise, the masses are only in Bulgarian language.
