International Mummery Festival 'Surva' in Pernik

The 20th edition of International Mummery Festival ‘Surva’’ will take place in Pernik in the end of January. The event will include many performances which will provoke Bulgarian and foreign tourists visit the small town near Sofia. 94 Bulgarian and 12 foreign groups have submitted their application to participate in the event, so a total of over 6000 participants are expected. It will be first time when and Albanians will participate in the event.
Pernik strives to develop the tradition of masquerade and turn into International tourism product. Last year Pernik was proclaimed to be the European capital of masquerade festivals.
This year holidaymakers will be able to buy various souvenirs that are directly related to the festival. All dolls and miniatures of kukeri will be presented at the various events within the framework of the festival. Should you wish to pick up your souvenir, you should attend the special bazaar ‘Survakarsko village’ where traditional masks and costumes, bells and other items typical for the kukeri tradition will be further exhibited.
Survakari wine with the symbol of the festival will be also sold. This is the first year when foreign guests will be able to easily get acquainted with the festival as they will be able to read a detailed guide in Russian, English and French where they will find most frequently used phrases during the masquerade. Foreign holidaymakers will also use a map of Pernik where the most important landmarks are properly marked.
The cheerful festival will be officially opened on 28th of January. Not only do holidaymakers enjoy the wonderful kukeri festival, but also have the option to visit Underground Mining Museum, Regional History Museum and the medieval Pernik fortress.
